Cathedral City California is the Coachella Valley's third largest city and home to more than 45,000 residents. The state-of-the-art Public Library (pictured lower right) houses art and historical collections along with an impressive selection of books. The city has excellent public services and is the safest community in the Coachella Valley. Cathedral City is home to four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. Residents seeking further education can attend the fully accredited College of the Desert. In addition, the city boasts a diverse and affordable real estate market. Cathedral City History: The Cahuilla Indians were the original inhabitants of Cathedral City California and lived throughout the Coachella Valley for more than two thousand years. In 1850, Col. Henry Washington of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discovered that the area's canyons resembled the interior of a grand cathedral. Recording history, he named this canyon Cathedral Canyon. Later, four developers had the same impression of the land and in 1925 they constructed the area's first official subdivision, Cathedral City.
